In this Episode: We answer a letter from "Banana Phobia", a person who is phobic about bananas. Did you know that 50% of humans have a lifelong, irrational fear of an object or situation? For around 7% of us, that fear rises to the level of clinical phobia.
The Stalker Letter That Started It All
“Dear UPC podcast. If you use my letter, please keep my name anonymous, because I’m deeply ashamed of what I’m about to say.
I have what would probably be considered a phobia about bananas. I don’t know when this started, just that I’ve had it for as long as I can remember.
If I see a banana I feel a tremendous sense of anxiety and need to get away from it immediately. There have been times when I have smelled a banana in a restraint or something and I become physically sick to my stomach.
I’m hoping you can provide insight into why I feel this way. I feel deeply embarrassed about this, because rationally, I understand how crazy or silly it sounds. But it feels like a sense of dread that I always have to walk around with.
Any info would help. Love you, love your podcast and never miss an episode. Thanks in advance!
P.S.- I’m a recent stalker of the podcast, and my experience so far has been great. ! I have to say, the stalker-only shows are even better than the free feed ones, so thank you for all of the tremendous bonus content that you offer. It was totally worth it to sign up.””

This “Psychology Fact” is neither psychology nor fact.
In this episode, Michael, Ashley and Andy discuss this “Psychology Fact”meme.
If we assume that the ONLY people who get their hands dirty through manual labor are honest people … we are making a subjective judgment.
In reality, there are countless professionals like doctors, teachers, clinicians, and many more who work just as hard without getting their hands “dirty”. They are also morally honest people who work very hard, and try every day to make the world a better place.
Our sense of who is honest or moral, and who is not, begins in early toddlerhood and is influenced by our role models and the people around us.
Developmental Psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg describes 3 stages that people go through when developing their sense of morality:
Level 1 - Pre-Conventional Morality (9 or younger)
We haven’t developed a personal code of morality. Instead, our moral code is shaped by consequences for breaking rules and the standards of the adults around us.
Level 2 - Conventional Morality (Adolescents & Adults)
We start to internalize the moral standards of our role models.
Authority is internalized but not questioned, and reasoning is based on the norms of our peer groups.
Level 3 - Post-Conventional Morality
Our judgment is based on self-chosen principles, our moral reasoning is based on individual rights and justice. This level of moral reasoning is as far as most people get.
Higher Morality
Only 10-15% of people are capable of the kind of abstract thinking required to obtain morality beyond this. While everyone else takes their moral views from those around them, only a small percentage think through ethical principles for themselves. They are willing to break the conventional laws of their time to strive for a greater sense of justice.
