Dr. Michael Drane breaks down each category on the scale, bringing you forensic insight and narrative analysis. Each episode contains a fascinating examination into the psychology of murder. We promise to bring you every Level with the intuition, grit, humor and honesty you have come to expect from us.
Episode 14: Buried Alive
Imagine the horror of being kidnapped. Let that sink in for a moment.
Now, imagine the horror of being buried alive, in a box, underground—which is worse?
Now, imagine both.
Level 19 psychopath Gary S. Krist was responsible for the abduction and ransom of Barbara Mackle, daughter to real estate tycoon Robert Mackle, in 1968. He kidnapped her, buried her alive, and then demanded her father pay a half-million-dollar ransom for her safe return. But is Gary as evil as we think he is?
In this week’s episode, Professor Michael Drane explores the qualifications for a Level 19 psychopath based on Dr. Michael Stone’s Gradations of Evil Scale. This episode is reserved for our beloved stalkers of the podcast and is a continuation of our Scale of Evil series.

Episode 13: Torture Murders
We explore the dark minds of those on Level 18 of the Gradations of Evil Scale, developed by Dr's Michael Stone and Gary Brucato. "Though psychotic, they do not typically prolong their torture. " Maury Travis, a quiet, unsuspecting man, shocked the St. Louis area after police discovered that he was responsible for the death of over 17 women. Known as the "Bi-State Strangler" or the "Street Walker
Episode 12: Psychological Gratification Of Murder
What kind of serial killer keeps you up at night? We might have a nominee for you. In this Episode: The transition to Category 17 is what Micahel Stone calls “a move into the darkest territory of the Gradations of Evil scale—covering a wide array of serial killers, torturers, and sadists. “
Long behind us are the killers who kill in self-defense, or because they momentarily lost their reasoning, their sanity….
The level 17 killer is something else, something darker. • They kill purely for the psychological gratification of the murder itself.
What sets the level 17 killer apart is their attacks usually involve some kind of sexual contact with their victim.
To review Michael Stone’s Gradations of Evil scale is to try and understand the motives behind WHY people do these things. Sometimes, even the killers themselves can’t explain it.
When you look at the examples commonly given for level 17, you find familiar names- Ted Bundy & Richard Ramirez- two serial rapists and sadists. Utterly unfeeling.
The thing is, both of these cases have been covered Ad nauseam on this and every other podcast. - So I don’t want to focus on the stories of Richard Ramirez and Ted Bundy as much as I want to talk about the pathology of the level 17 killer, using Ramirez and Bundy as examples.

In this episode Unpopular Culture brings back Dr. Michael Stone’s Scale of Evil. Today we look at level 13 on the scale of evil these are Psychopathic murderers with inadequate, rageful personalities.
Ed Gein and Benjamin Nathaniel Smith as examples of how these murders used rage to kill. Professor Michael Drane is here to help us make sense of this complex level on the scale.
Episode 7: Cornered Killers
We’re always talking about how the 1970’s were an especially demented time in American History. And if these three cases don’t stand out as blaring examples about the dangers of warped religious fervor, then nothing does.
This is where our episode on the level 12 scale of evil begins- With a warning about what it means to follow your own killer down a path of weaponized religiosity. We present the cases of Ervil LaBaron, Jim Jones, and Immanuel David,
In May of 1977 a sadistic Mormon cult leader Ervil Lebaron orders his cult to walk into a clinic and gun down a rival cult leader

Self-Defense Murder: Level 4

Bonus Episode: The Case of Jeffrey McDonald
In this Episode: Michael Drane dives into the mysterious True Crime case of Jeffery MacDonald. This is the case that ALMOST made it onto UPC as level 11 on Dr. Stone's "Scale of Evil".
Media sources who have reviewed The Scale of Evil have cited Jeffrey MacDonald as a level 11 murderer, even though there is serious controversy around this case. Many say MacDonald didn't murder his family, and compelling evidence backs this up.
We make the argument that, even IF MacDonald did murder his family, he does not belong at level 11 on the Scale of Evil.
